Welcome to the Babydoll Sheep Association of Australia Inc. (BSAA)

The Babydoll Sheep Association of Australia Inc. (BSAA) is the official Babydoll Association for the Australian Stud Sheep Breeders Association (ASSBA).

BSAA is a national organisation made up of dedicated breeders and fans of Babydoll sheep from across Australia, many of whom are members of the Australian Stud Sheep Breeders Association.

The heritage of this breed traces back to the arrival  in Australia  of the then much smaller Southdowns, the earlier, smaller type of the breed.  BSAA is committed to the preservation and promotion of these small sheep and they are now commonly called “Babydolls,” a term which originated and is used in the United States, is used in the United Kingdom and has been embraced in Australia.

BSAA warmly welcomes new members and value contributions from everyone who shares our passion for this unique breed.

The primary objectives of the Association are to:

  • Serve as the official body supporting the maintenance of the Australian Stud Sheep Breeders Association’s (ASSBA) Breed Standard for registered Babydoll sheep.
  • Act as a liaison with ASSBA and advocate on behalf of the Babydoll sheep community.
  • Educate breeders, prospective breeders, and the general public about ASSBA Babydoll sheep, including their origins, significance, and proper care.
  • Promote and market ASSBA Babydoll sheep, including through our website’s Sale Page, where members can advertise at no cost.
  • Maintain three Facebook pages: our BSAA Inc Members’ Only Page, the BSAA Babydoll Sheep Breeders and Fans’ Network (Australia), and the BSAA Flock Finder Network. These platforms allow members to share information, seek advice, conduct Babydoll sheep transactions and showcase their Babydoll sheep.
  • Support the development of showing guidelines as the population of ASSBA Babydoll sheep grows and breeder expertise increases.

Why Do People Love Their Babydoll Sheep?

Words from Babydoll owners and Breeders.

“Because of their size, they’re not overwhelming, and that makes daily interaction so pleasurable. They’re wonderful grazers too, keeping the grass down without damaging the land, but honestly, their presence alone would be reason enough to keep them.” Babydoll Breeder, Qld

“What is the purpose of a Babydoll sheep? I just like them, no other reason. We have the space and I have the time and the interest to invest in breeding better Babydolls. Love being able to share them with others.” Babydoll breeder, Vic

“Babydolls are fantastic converters, extremely efficient and low maintenance with great temperaments.  Perfect for homesteaders”. Babydoll owner, ethical food and fibre producer, Vic

“My son in law comes from NZ & grew up on a sheep property & found sheep to be of no interest what-so-ever until he spent time around my sheep & now he & a few of his mates want Babydolls because they like living on acreage & they have young children but they don’t have time to mow.” Babydoll breeder, NSW

“I have Babydolls because I really want to help preserve the heritage of these lovely sheep.  I feel each newborn lamb is another Babydoll who will be able to make sure this breed is able to continue” Babydoll Breeder, NSW.

“Babydoll Sheep are a wonderful breed of livestock. Small in size, big in personality. They suit our family perfectly, with their docile nature they are gentle around our children and allow us to farm as a family. We can’t imagine our life without them.” Babydoll Breeder, NSW

“There’s a quiet contentment that comes from watching them graze, or the playful energy of the lambs bouncing around. They bring warmth, character, and a kind of grounding to the farm that I can’t imagine being without.” Qld

“I get asked all the time by friends “why do you have Babydoll sheep?” I explain that while they’re supposed to be good eating & their wool is good for felting, I sell them to people like myself who want them as easy going, easy to look after, super friendly pets that do a great job on acreage, fertilising & trimming & grass cutting. A lot of people I talk to find that very appealing”. Babydoll breeder, Qld

“To me, my Babydolls are just enjoyable and make me feel happy.” Babydoll Breeder, SA.

“Having Babydoll sheep has been one of the simplest joys in my life. They’re gentle little souls with teddy-bear faces that make me smile every time I step into the paddock. What I love most about them is their temperament; they’re curious, calm, and easy to be around, which makes caring for them feel less like work and more like an enjoyable part of the day.” Babydoll Breeder, Qld
